Reproducibility Hackathon

Workflow and Curriculum Development

Purpose

To develop an open source curriculum for a two-day workshop on reproducibility with an emphasis on modularity for incorporation and dissemination in multiple formats.

Goals not in scope

  • developing new tools
  • specialized curriculum components
  • tools/approaches for bench science
  • anything that others cannot reuse without restrictions

People

  • Teachers
  • Researchers
  • Developers
  • Students
  • Programmers
  • Experts in the open movement

Reproducibility in sciences is a problem

Change through education

Overview of the obstacles

  • People are unaware there is a problem
  • 100% reproducibility is hard
  • One workflow does not fill all
  • Lack of motivation
  • Scared of initial time investments

Motivation

Stress self-benefit

Saving time and effort

Bigger & faster science

Audience for Bootcamp

  • Little to no programming experience
  • Has struggled with organization
  • Excel users

What are the essentials for learning reproducibility?

Mind Map

How the hell do we teach this?

1. Teach reproducibility as a way of thinking

2. Good, Better, Best

3. Don't teach git, teach version control as a concept

4. Strive to be programming agnostic

5. Teach pain points and how to get help

Mission Statement: To train researchers in the best practices and approaches of reproducible research

Tagline: Accelerating scientific progress through reproducible science.

Developed new workflow for managing curriculum material

Developed new workflow for managing curriculum material

  • central place
  • Continuous checking
  • Easy to remix content
  • Single download
  • Scratch space
  • Easy Setup

Ulterior Motive

Get people passionate about reproducibility together in one place to discuss tools.

i.e.nerd out.
